Weeks of 1/27/2017

 

In science we continued our study of energy.  We completed a challenge to create a 3 dimensional freestanding marble run.  The marble must travel at least 40 centimeters.  Students worked in pairs to complete the challenge.  After many revisions all were excited to have their design work.   In social studies we started our study of the Southeast Region.  In writing we continued our opinion writing as well as complete an on demand fictional narrative writing assignment.   In reading, we continued work on compare and contrast open response questions using Google Classroom as well as start our study of biographies.  In math we continued our unit on fractions with comparing, adding and subtracting fractions using fraction strips and a number line.  Students should study math facts nightly.  

  

Your child should read for at least 20 minutes nightly, complete the Reading log and parent/guardian should sign the reading log.

Bingo for Books will be on Thursday, February 9 from 5pm - 6pm in the cafeteria.   A fun night out with our Coburn families.

    The Town Council voted in favor of supporting the New Coburn School!!!!  This is great news and a huge thank you to everyone who came by to support Coburn School!  Your support is greatly appreciated!

In science we started our study of energy, forms of energy and how energy changes.   In social studies we started our study of the Southeast Region.  In writing we continued our opinion writing.   We have chosen a topic and added reasons to support that topic.  In reading, we continued work on compare and contrast open response questions using Google Classroom as well as articles about civil rights.  Next week we will start our study of biographies.  In math we continued our unit on fractions with comparing, adding and subtracting fractions.  Students should study math facts nightly.  

  

Your child should read for at least 20 minutes nightly, complete the Reading log and parent/guardian should sign the reading log.

Reading Tip:  After reading with your child, have a conversation about the book.  Ask him/her to summarize what he/she read.

  Tom McCabe, story teller from Paint Box Theater, visited Coburn School.  Tom talked to the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders about writing and told us some stories.   In science we worked on prototypes of a straw rocket.  Students worked in pairs or groups of 3 to create a straw rocket that could fly at least three feet.   In social studies we continued our study of Northeast Region.  In writing we wrote a fictional writing piece and started opinion writing.   In reading, we continued work on compare and contrast open response questions using Google Classroom.  In math we started a unit on fractions.   Students should study math facts nightly.

MATH TIP OF THE WEEK: Teach your child math tricks, such as the 9-method.

Example: To figure out 9 x 7, hold out all 10 fingers. Start counting at the pinky finger on your left hand, and then lower the seventh finger (the index finger on your right hand). There are now six fingers to the left and three fingers to the right of the seventh finger. The answer is 63. The trick works with 9 x 2 through 9 x 10.

Important Dates:

1/16  No school, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day

1/17: Town Council Meeting @ 7:00.  They will be voting on a new Coburn School.  Please attend if you can!  Bring family and friends to show support!  The larger the crowd to show support the better!

       December Days Are Short by Jack Prelutsky was our inspiration to write and illustrate our own poems about December days being short.
